We were already very busy with the restoration of another Esprit plus my blue Ferrari 308 so nothing progressed quickly at all.
In May of 2018 I was hiding from work responsibilities. I was sitting inside 351H just taking a break. I was staring at the poorly recovered dash. I knew it wasn't original. I wondered if there was anything underneath that might show me what the original interior was like. I carefully peeled back some of the leather on the glovebox door. And to my amazement I saw green! It was faded and ruined by glue, but it was GREEN. I pulled back the brown shag carpeting and yep, sure enough I found traces of the original orange carpet underneath.
I also noticed that the Esprit had an extra fan for the cooling system, as well as a duct that didn't look like others I had seen in photos. I knew the car had AC when I bought it, what I didn't realize was that AC was not a factory option on an S1. It has an extremely rare dealer installed AC system and heavy duty cooling option. There are currenlty only FOUR known S1's in the US with AC!
The last two photos show the original steering column cover. This piece was shaded enough by the dash that it did not fade or significantly wear. What is interesting is the black finish, almost like "mouse hair" used on vintage Ferraris or like a suede finish. This is interesting becasue there are a TON of fake white/green tartan S1's out there. But they all have a grey painted dash, and a grey painted steering column cover. That is what the prototype S1 cars had, but the actual production cars had this suede like material. In other words most of the restored white/tartan S1's out there are probably wrong.
