So we are up to about July of 2018. I get the title back from the state of Texas and it's a "Rebuilt Salvage" "Loss Unknown"
I have gone through every official channel with the stat to try and get more information. There just isn't any. The owner I bought the car from bough tit from "Speedco" in the early/mid 1980's. That could have been the name of an insurance company. I spoke to the family and the daughter had no memory of the car every being wrecked. So here is what I know:
All of the glass has original date codes. I say had because the windsheild and passenger door glass got broken by an idiot at the body shop.
I didn't find any evidence of panel replacement, except the front air dam was gone. Later in the restoration I realized the bottom of the nose had been cut off too. This was a common mod in the 1980's to add a S3 type front spoiler to make the car look like the newer turbo models. This tracks becasue the wheels on the car when I got it are styled like the S3 Turbo cars too.
The dash. Once I got the tan leather off of the original dash I realized why it fit so poorly. Someone had completey broken the thin fiberglass dash in half while presumably stealing the stereo. The car had a radio at some point because there was an antenna installed on the driver's side a-pillar. Most S1's didn't come with a radio, but at somepoint this one certainly had one. Could this be the cause of the salvage loss?
My guess is that the car was stolen, joy ridden, probably ran over some curbs that damaged the nose, then as a final nail in the coffin they destroyed the dash while stealing the radio.
S1 dashes are impossible to find. Luckily Sports Car World of Dallas had one that was damaged on the opposite sie. So I cut both in half anf fiberglassed the good parts together to make one perfect dash.
As for the repairs to the lower nose, I was able to find an owner in the UK that used his own car to make molds and repair panels for me.
